What We Do

An Automatic Transmission Rebuild is essentially a full overhaul of your transmission to restore it to as close to factory condition as possible. It’s more involved than a simple repair but less drastic than replacing the entire transmission with a new one. Here’s a clear breakdown:

What It Means

  • Disassembly – The transmission is completely removed from the vehicle and taken apart.
  • Inspection – Every component is checked for wear, damage, or failure (gears, clutches, seals, bearings, valve body, etc.).
  • Replacement – All worn or faulty parts are replaced (often with an upgrade to stronger aftermarket components if needed).
  • Reassembly & Calibration – The unit is reassembled, clearances and torque specs are set, and the valve body is tuned.
  • Testing – Bench testing and/or road testing to make sure shifting is smooth and all gears work properly

A DSG transmission rebuild is a process where the dual-clutch gearbox (commonly found in VW, Audi, Skoda, and some other makes) is disassembled, worn or damaged parts are replaced, and the unit is reassembled and recalibrated to factory specifications.

Since DSG gearboxes are more complex than conventional automatics or manuals, the rebuild process is more specialised and usually involves three main areas:

Mechatronic Unit Repair

A DSG mechatronic unit is a crucial component in a Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmission system, commonly found in many modern dual-clutch automatic transmissions (especially in Volkswagen Group vehicles).

What it is:

  • The mechatronic unit combines mechanical, electronic, and hydraulic systems into a single module.
  • It acts as the control center of the DSG transmission.

What it does:

  • Controls the gear shifts by managing hydraulic pressure to engage and disengage clutches.
  • Uses sensors and electronic control to select and execute gear changes quickly and smoothly.
  • Ensures the coordination between the two clutches that operate alternate gears (odd gears on one clutch, even gears on the other) to provide rapid gear changes without interrupting power delivery
Mechatronic Replacement & Repair

Mechatronic Unit Replacement

  • Purpose: Restores proper electronic and hydraulic control.
  • Common failure symptoms:
    • PRNDS lights flashing
    • Limp mode / no drive
    • Delayed engagement
    • Fault codes like P17BF, P189C, P072A
  • Typical causes:
    • Hydraulic pressure leaks
    • Solenoid failure
    • Electronic control board damage
  • Replacement process:
    • Remove the old mechatronic from the gearbox housing
    • Install new or refurbished unit
    • Perform basic settings and adaptations with VCDS or ODIS
    • Flush and refill with DSG-specific fluid

When You Might Need a Clutch Replacement

Signs your clutch is wearing out include:

  • Slipping: Engine revs rise without matching acceleration.
  • Difficulty shifting: Especially into first or reverse.
  • Burning smell: Often from clutch material overheating.
  • Clutch pedal changes: Spongy, stiff, or vibrating pedal feel.
  • Chattering or juddering when engaging.

Manual Clutch Replacements

What’s Involved in a Clutch Replacement

  1. Remove the transmission
    • This is the time-consuming part; may involve removing driveshaft’s, linkages, starter motor, etc.
  2. Remove old clutch assembly
    • Includes the pressure plate, friction disc, and release bearing.
  3. Inspect and resurface flywheel
    • Many mechanics recommend resurfacing or replacing the flywheel for proper mating.
  4. Install new clutch kit
    • Align with a clutch alignment tool before bolting down.
  5. Reinstall transmission
    • Reconnect all linkages, wiring, and mounts.
  6. Test drive

What’s Involved in a Clutch Replacement

What is A CVT?

A CVT transmission — Continuously Variable Transmission — is a type of automatic gearbox that doesn’t use fixed gears like a traditional automatic or manual.

Instead, it uses a belt-and-pulley system (or sometimes chains) to create an infinite number of gear ratios within a range. That means:

  • No gear “steps” — it smoothly adjusts to the exact ratio needed for speed, load, and engine power.
  • Better fuel efficiency — keeps the engine in its most efficient RPM range.
  • Smooth acceleration — no distinct gear changes, so you don’t feel “shifts.”
CVT Transmission Service & Rebuilds

How it works (simplified)

  1. Two cone-shaped pulleys face each other.
  2. A steel belt (or chain) runs between them.
  3. One pulley connects to the engine (drive pulley), the other to the wheels (driven pulley).
  4. The pulleys move closer or further apart, changing the belt position and altering the gear ratio continuously.

Fast Turnaround

Central Automatics was founded in 1971 on Mentmore Avenue in Rosebery by two migrant tradesmen, Alf Lepore and Jimmy Georgiardis, who shared a passion for precision, hard work, and the growing Australian automotive scene. As one of Sydney’s very first specialist transmission workshops, they quickly built a reputation for quality workmanship and honest service, specialising in Holden, Ford, and Chrysler vehicles of the era.

In the early years, Central Automatics became known for expert work in transmission repairs, complete rebuilds, torque converters, and differentials. In 1976, Serge Rossi joined as an apprentice and, by the 1990s, became a partner alongside Alf and Jimmy. Throughout the ’80s and ’90s, Central Automatics was the trusted name for Sydney’s taxi industry—keeping hundreds of taxis on the road day and night with reliability and speed.

As the automotive landscape changed, so did our focus. Central Automatics gradually transitioned away from taxi and fleet work, turning our attention exclusively to private vehicle servicing and repairs. This shift allowed us to dedicate more time, care, and precision to every transmission we rebuild—providing a more personalised experience for every customer.

The next generation soon carried the torch forward. In 1996, James Lepore, Alf’s son, began his apprenticeship, mastering the 3-speed Borg Warner transmissions that defined the era. Over the years, James became a European transmission specialist, gaining extensive knowledge and experience across ZF, DSG, and other advanced systems. A decade later, Gian Rossi, Serge’s son, joined the team, continuing the proud family legacy of craftsmanship, innovation, and dedication.
